Both Catalan sport newspapers were today full of praise for Alex Song. He had an extremely impressive 100% pass completion rate (102 passes) against Valladolid and is more important to the team this year according to both Sport and Mundo Deportivo.
He's completed three La Liga games so far this season and isn't being used as a defender. Indeed his performance against Valladolid made Sport say that he was returning to his old Arsenal form. They say he was much closer to the way he played at Arsenal and that this was a positive for all involved.
So how does this end up as Alex Song returning to Arsenal?
Well, TuttoMercatoWeb in Italy have misunderstood the 'returning to Arsenal' part of Sport's headline and decided to run an article without reading the rest of the Catalan newspaper's story. TMW, a huge source of transfer rumours, claim on their website this afternoon:
'Because of his limited use in Barcelona Alex Song, Cameroonian midfielder, would be considering a return to Arsenal, who he left to join the Catalan club. The daily Sport reported the news.'
It's not the first time this kind of thing has happened with Alex Song. Just under a month ago an opinion piece on an English website about Manchester United and Song was also misunderstood by the TMW group and it led to rumours in English newspapers such as the Daily Express within two days.
Let's see if Alex Song to Arsenal takes off in the same way. French website Le10 are also covering it, and they even manage to link to the Sport article they've totally misunderstood.
Update: The Daily Star are already reporting it.
