Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson believes the current players aren’t bothered about finishing above local rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Mauricio Pochettino’s have the chance to finish above Arsenal for the first time in years depending on this weekend’s results.
Speaking to Sky Sport News, Merson was asked whether the Arsenal would be concerned about finishing the season ahead Tottenham Hotspur. Merson thinks the attitude at the club has changed from when he was there because he feels now Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title their isn’t much concern about overtaking this neighbours. Merson said the only rivalry now is between the two set of fans, and not on the pitch.
“The current Arsenal players only care about winning the league, not finishing above Tottenham. Only the fans are concerned,” said Merson on the attitude of the Arsenal players.
Tottenham go into the game against Newcastle United on Sunday knowing a draw will be enough to clinch second place behind Leicester City, and Arsenal in third. However, Spurs go into the game without a win in two games after their defeat to Southampton last weekend, and the draw with Chelsea at the start of the month.
