L'Equipe today report in their newspaper edition that Arsenal are set to blow Newcastle United out of the water by doubling their bid for young midfielder Florien Thauvin. Yes, Arsenal, normally accused of being cautious in the transfer window are prepared to not just beat Newcastle's offer but, wait for it, double it! That all sounds very impressive until L'Equipe reveal that the new price will be €5m, which is just several good months of Theo Walcott's new contract.
The Bastia youngster's current contract runs until the summer of 2014 so come the next transfer window the French club will start to worry about the prospect of losing him for free, Arsenal's interest could sooth those worries and give them what they'd consider to be a decent offer now.
It's claimed Arsenal want the player immediately, rather than waiting until summer or completing a deal and loaning him back, and Bastia expect to receive a firm offer from Arsene Wenger in the coming days.
Arsenal fans will hope this isn't the extent of the club's summer spending. Edinson Cavani had been the subject of rumours which Wenger commented on and we wrote about how a bid wouldn't have to be crazy to get the Napoli man, despite what their extrovert president says almost weekly.
Florien Thauvin isn't a well known name but the 20 year old has represented France to U20 level. Bastia are having a good season after they were promoted as Ligue 2 champions. They currently stand 13th in Ligue 1.
