Germany 1-0 Portugal: Mario Gomez strike seals victory for Joachim Loew's side

Germany reached the top of the table in Group B after defeating Portugal by 1-0, courtesy exquisite header from Mario Gomez in the second half.

Joachim Loew fielded a 4-2-3-1 formation with Gomez upfront helped by Müller, Özil and Podolski behind. Portugal shaped themselves in 4-3-3 with Ronaldo and Nani supporting Helder Postiga on either flanks.

The Germans came close to open the account within first three minutes when striker Mario Gomez managed a glancing header from Boateng's cross from the right flank, easily saved by Patricio.

Real Madrid full back Fabio Coentrao bursts forward brilliantly and looks to slip in Helder Postiga, earning a corner in the process.

Arsenal's new boy Lukas Podolski had a sniff at goal as he tried to fire from 20 yards out through outside of the foot, but the Portuguese goalie was equally up to it.

Coentrao initiated another brilliant attack from the right, swung in superbly leaving Helder Postiga to have a free-header in the middle. The striker makes a minimal contact without harming Neuer.

The Germans maintained excellent possession in the middle, but Portuguese wingers wriggled free on odd occasions. Ronaldo mesmerized Boateng with few step over down the left and engineered a low cross that created panic at the German heart momentarily.

Germany enjoying a lion share of possession in the middle dominated by Khedira & Schweinsteiger created few patient build ups. Podolski tried his luck with an ambitious volley from a deep cross. Seconds later, Muller had a great chance of opening the scoring but couldn’t find the target.

Within seconds remaining in the first half Portugal created the best chance of the match. From a corner Pepe places the ball into the crossbar that bounces down directly onto the line and is hoofed clear.

Immediately after the break Podolski stationed himself at the back post meeting Muller’s ball across goal from the right but saw his shot blocked by Joao Pereira.

Coentrao lively from the first whistle now bursts down the left once more and looks to find lone figure Postiga. However, his pass is cut out, but Ronaldo picks up the loose ball and fires a shot just wide of goal.

Podolski received the ball on the left, crosses well first-time for Gomez whose weak header didn’t harm the Portuguese custodian.

Cristiano Ronaldo finally wriggled himself free in left-channel. Boateng chasing him all the way down recovers brilliantly to get a foot in and block his shot.

Germany finally broke the deadlock through Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez who heads home imperiously meeting Sami Khedira’s cross in the centre of the area.

Portugal were caught in the possession in the middle and Muller is left free on the right. His low cross intended towards Mario Gomez was tempting but the striker just could not get on the end of the pass.

Paulo Bento's men pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Nani over hits a shot that dipped wickedly and strikes the bar leaving Neuer clueless.

Substitute Nelson Oliveira lays the ball across goal that German defenders fail to deal with it and it reaches Varela at the far-post who could only hit straight at the body of Neuer.

With only seconds remaining Ronaldo found himself in some space from the left hand side. He intelligently passed the ball to Nani who just needed to hit the target, but German defender came in the way ensuring safety.
