Who will take over from Houllier should he retire? (which I hope he doesn't by the way)

Here are the latest odds courtesy of Skybet.

  • David Moyes – 1/1
  • Rafael Benitez – 5/2
  • Sam Allardyce – 5/1
  • Mark Hughes – 7/1
  • Kevin Macdonald – 8/1
  • Martin Jol – 8/1
  • Steve McClaren – 8/1
  • Jurgen Klinsmann – 12/1
  • Sven Goran Eriksson – 12/1
  • Ray Wilkins – 16/1
  • Gianfranco Zola – 16/1
  • Didier Deschamps – 20/1

I have to say this list looks better than the one compiled after O'Neill left, no Curbishley, Southgate or Bradley! Thank God.

When Martin O'Neill left I wanted Martin Jol to take over, he had successful spells with Spurs and Ajax and was the man for the job as far as a lot of Villa fans were concerned. Since then most of the talk has been of Moyes and Benitez.

I'd still like Jol to be honest, I'd be happy with Rafa and I don't think Moyes will leave Everton yet.

Of the rest, I'm not particularly struck on Mark Hughes. I just don't think he is the right option for us. Ray Wilkins is an interesting addition to the list, would he be able to make the step up? I like the man but I'd probably only have him as an assistant.

Deschamps is still under contract until next summer, would he really leave Marseille to come to Villa Park? I'd like to think the lure of the Premier League would be a big temptation, I can't see him getting a job at Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs or even Man City in the near future so why not Villa?

So, who stands out for you? And who would you put your money on?

I don't take odds seriously at all now after the last time round. Houllier was 66/1 at one point! I'd put my money on Benitez to be honest, there's more chance of Keane coming to Villa than Moyes, why he's always odds on to be the next manager is beyond me. Benitez wants to come back to the league and I'd say we're the biggest club he has a realistic chance of managing unless Citeh give Mancini the boot and for some reason want Benitez in.
