Liverpool step up move for Bafétimbi Gomis and are holding talks with Lyon

A striker linked with Liverpool? An actual striker? This must be a first.

Why are we amazed? This is because lately, it seems that every time Liverpool are linked with a player who supposedly is being targeted with the purpose of bolstering their frontline, he ends up being a winger or an attacking midfielder and not a striker.

Rest assured, Bafétimbi Gomis is indeed a striker. For those of you who don't follow Ligue 1, Bafétimbi (Bafé) Gomis is a 27 year old French footballer who currently plays for Lyon. He moved there from arch rivals Saint-Etienne in 2009 and has scored 43 goals in 122 appearances for the Rhône based club since. 1 goal every 3 games is far from a bad ratio considering he has played alongside prolific goalscorer Lisandro Lopez (74 goals in 142 games) ever since arriving at the club.

Now the question is why would Liverpool want Bafé Gomis? The answer is fairly simple: he would be rather cheap. Lyon have been in a bit of trouble financially recently and are looking to offload one or two players to balance the books. The reported price from Le 10 Sport (yes, them again) is €8 million and with wages that wouldn't break the bank for the Merseyside club, Bafé Gomis would certainly be a shrewd buy by Brendan Rodgers.

Le 10 Sport are reporting that Lyon have spoken to Liverpool representatives about a potential deal but talks haven't progressed any further, yet. Le 10 Sport state that they expect movement to happen within the next few weeks and if they are right, expect to see the deal mentioned elsewhere around that time. Regarding the credibility of the source, Le 10 Sport have been about a week ahead of most British outlets regarding stories involving a variety of players and clubs (the BBC with the Drogba to Chelsea loan deal and lately the Mirror concerning Kurt Zouma being invited to Old Trafford).

The deal makes sense. Liverpool lack a potent strike force, heavily relying on Luis Suarez for goals and with the Uruguyan averaging more misses than goals, another striker could certainly help the team. Gomis would offer a certain amount of pace and a lethal touch in front of goal (only yesterday did he score a hat trick against title rivals Marseille in a 4-1 demolishing of the Mediterranean club): exactly what Liverpool need.

With the low price and desperate need of a striker at Liverpool, expect this story to crop up in the British media relatively soon. As to the outcome of this story, the January transfer window is only a month away and as you all know, a lot can happen in football in such a short period of time.
