Gazzetta dello Sport seem very confident in their Saturday edition that Guillermo Varela can become a Genoa player before the transfer window shuts in a couple of days. They don't explain why they're so confident, but say Genoa expect to get the 'OK' from Manchester United on the completion of a deal.
The story has been building in Italy over the past couple of days, with initial claims from Tuttomercatoweb that Manchester United, as a club, and Varela's entourage had all agreed on a deal. The stumbling block was manager Louis van Gaal, who didn't want to lose the young defender, given how weak his options at fullback are right now, and Varela's agent were flying for further talks.
Gazzetta said yesterday that Van Gaal wanted to give Varela one last chance to impress, and was proving a 'wall' in negotiations. Varela started against Derby County on Friday evening and played very well, which would suggest he's not going anywhere.
Given all of that, we're not sure why Gazzetta are still so confident, but there's every chance the report was written before the Derby match.
