Last week it had looked like Manchester United would be given a clear route to William Carvalho. Other clubs who had been interested had stopped going to Sporting Lisbon matches. AS Monaco spent a few week checking the player out but there interest appeared to quieten and Chelsea, Juventus, Arsenal and Livepool stopped attending games.
It was bad news for Sporting who had encouraged as they try to create an auction scenario ahead of the summer. The big clubs show an interest, the higher their chances of getting close to Carvalho's €45m buyout clause.
On Saturday Manchester United yet again watched Carvalho and Arsenal were also in attendance, but this time there was a new club around... Real Madrid.
It's not the first time Real Madrid have been credited with an interest but it is the first time, at last for quite a while, that they've bothered to send someone to watch the player in action. Before the game Carvalho picked up his latest player of the month award and, again, he was one of Sporting's best performers in a 2-0 victory over Gil Vicente.
The Real Madrid trip comes just days after Carvalho's father, Simão, was quoted by A Bola as saying he'd like to see his son go to Spain instead of England, mentioning Real Madrid and Barcelona specifically. Simão Carvalho said that with Cristiano Ronaldo being 'King of Spain', he felt it would be nice for his to follow his Portugal team mate.
Real Madrid interest is the last thing Manchester United need if they really want to sign William Carvalho.
