Michael Owen asked Liverpool if he could return but Brendan Rodgers said no

Liverpool's current striking situation could be an awful lot different if Michael Owen had his way after leaving Manchester United. The former England international told 'Tubes' on Sky's Soccer AM programme this morning that he approached Liverpool about the idea of returning to the club and was refused a second Anfield chance by Brendan Rodgers.

Owen went on to join Stoke City but has already experienced fitness issues there. It could have been a different story and if he can manage to get himself fit for the rest of the season then he'd have surely been a useful addition to the Liverpool squad, but Rodgers wasn't keen on the move at all.

Michael Owen doesn't have the best reputation amongst Liverpool supporters who weren't happy with his move to Real Madrid and then obviously not very pleased to see him win the Premier League title with Manchester United. A few comments here and there haven't helped and it's a shame he's not held highly by the Liverpool faithful, although understandable to an extent.

Rodgers wasn't aware Borini would get injured and hindsight is a wonderful tool but Michael Owen could have been a useful option for the Liverpool manager as he struggles with a lack of forwards. Or, if injuries struck, at least he could have kept the young Italian striker company in the treatment room.

What's useful in having two crocks in the treatment room?

Whichever clown wrote this article is a total plonker. And thats being nice

Not the brightest spark are you Bill? You understand there's a difference between the words 'could' and 'would', right?

Perhaps not. Either way the final sentence made it clear the situation would have been a risk.
