Claudio Marchisio has often been linked with Manchester United by the Italian press and often it appeared to be a self-serving mechanism for him and Juventus. Reports would appear, usually in Tuttosport, about Manchester United interest in the player, only for him and Juventus to be able to rubbish them and turn down the possibility of a move, thus reaffirming their commitment to one another.
Back in March we covered a story from the newspaper claiming that Sir Alex Ferguson was 'obsessed' with signing the Italy international and had approached Juventus several times, on each occasion being told where to go by the Serie A club. They said it had been going on since 2010 and Marchisio was a personal desire of Ferguson, with him leading the charge to get the player. The midfielder himself was said to be dead against a move and wanted Manchester United to stop trying.
Then in June things changed, Tuttosport quoted Marchisio, whilst away with the Italian national team, as saying "I'm waiting to see if I am important for Juve. I will speak with the club as soon as I go back to Italy. I'd like to stay, but we must both agree... I'd look around and I would be ready to consider any offers. I read the interest of Manchester United and Monaco: in these cases, I'd be proud."
The newspaper also ran a poll of their readers, to gauge opinion at the time on how they'd feel if Juventus were to sell their local born star. The results were overwhelming, 72.5% said he should be sold under no circumstances, and 22% said he could only be sold if it meant the signing of Cavani or Suarez, the rest of the votes were made up of other scenarios. Of course, Cavani has gone to PSG and Suarez doesn't look likely to move to Turin at this stage.
Today's Corriere dello Sport says that Moyes has personally contacted Juventus about a possible move for Marchisio. They say it's not just trivial gossip and they've found it out from a source close to the Manchester United manager.
It's claimed that Manchester United are getting frustrated with Fabregas and there's a growing belief that the player may simply be trying to get a new contract with Barcelona. Therefore Moyes has taken things into his own hands and is sourcing other midfielders. There is no talk of a bid being made just yet, but Corriere dello Sport reckon there is definitely interest in the player.
Juventus don't desperately need to keep Marchisio but would no doubt prefer to, if he's there then he probably needs to be a first team player but the Serie A side have a good selection of central midfielders including Pirlo, Vidal, Pogba, Isla and Asamoah. If they got a good bid and Marchiso agreed to leave then it's not beyond the realms of possibility that a move could happen.
