FC Porto, one of the classic teams of European football, seem to have responded to Manchester City's complaints about racist chanting with tit-for-tat complaints about chants directed at their star striker Hulk.
Manchester City made an official complaint to UEFA after Mario Balotelli was thought to be subjected to monkey chants in Portugal last week. At the time the Porto coach tried to explain that their supporters had been mis-heard and they were actually chanting something which sounded remarkably identical to monkey chants.
However, yesterday UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Porto for improper conduct. Manchester City went on to beat the team 4-0 at the Etihad yesterday evening and towards the end their fans mocked Porto's Hulk for a poor performance.
Givanildo Vieira de Souza uses the nickname 'Hulk' due to his size, it's a play on the Incredible Hulk and Porto themselves push this line with images on their website showing him bright green with his muscles bulging. Being a 'hulk' isn't a race or nationality yet when City fans chanted 'You're not so incredible' it upset the Portuguese club and they are preparing an official complaint. The City fans also called Hulk a cheat, something else which has offended Porto.
They want UEFA to open disciplinary proceedings against Manchester City.
You could be forgiven for thinking that rather than Porto taking the racism allegations seriously and letting the UEFA investigation come to a conclusion, they have taken matters into their own hands and this is some kind of revenge.
Classy that Porto, real classy.
