On Monday Spanish newspaper Sport declared that Barcelona were interested in Stefan Savic, the Fiorentina defender who used to play for Manchester City. Savic had been under Barcelona observation including in the Europa League match against Tottenham Hotspur last week but Sport explained that the defender was attracting wider interest too.
Manchester United have been close to a deal for Savic during the January transfer window, claimed Sport, but no agreement could be found with Fiorentina, who would have been loathe to lose both Juan Cuadrado and Savic in the same transfer window. There's no indication that Manchester United interest has dropped since then and therefore Sport loom to a possible summer battle for the defender.
The claims were something new in the transfer rumour mill so Sport Witness spoke to Savic's agent Zarko Pelicic and he told us "For now Stefan is staying in Florence and will go ahead with Fiorentina, he is very happy now with the conditions.
"Of course he feels good when clubs such as Manchester United and Barcelona are interested in him, but he is not burdened. He knows his achievements and he knows that his time is coming. I do not know his price, if it is €20m or more. For one I am sure that he is not a cheap player and only top clubs in top leagues can buy him."
That Sport, a Catalan newspaper, were happy to link Savic with Barcelona shows the progress the 24 year old has made since he moved to Fiorentina in 2012.
