Gianluca Vialli is carving out a career for himself in football punditry in both Italy and England and appears to be happier to share information he's picked up than many of his English counterparts. Whilst appearing on Sky Sports Italia on Sunday afternoon, Vialli dropped the bombshell that Tottenham had already been in talks with Andrea Pirlo ahead of a possible free transfer next summer.
TMW picked up the programme and transcribed the most important quote "I got the rumours from London. There is contact between Andrea Pirlo and Tottenham for next season."
The comments have been taken seriously enough in Italy to be picked up by several other outlets. Pirlo's situation at Juventus isn't quite as clear cut as perhaps it should be. Antonio Conte has stated that Pirlo will have to get used to being rotated like other players and him being dropped from the squad recently for purposes of rest started all kinds of rumours in Italy.
The gist was that Juventus don't want to renew his contract on terns he currently enjoys and would be looking for something more related to playing time and success as the player gets older. Pirlo will be 35 at the end of the season and it's only to be expected that Juventus would want to protect their own interests. He is one of their most influential players, scoring on Sunday against AC Milan, but that is becoming less apparent as he gets older and other players rise to the challenge more.
It's very unlikely that Juventus would offer him a two year deal but at 35, would and should Tottenham? The idea of Pirlo may be nicer than having the player in Premier League in practice.
