On June 7th, 2015, the usually fairly reliable France Football published an article about Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Martial. Back then the French forward didn't quite have the big name he does now and the claims, whilst interesting, weren't exactly blockbuster stuff.
France Football had claimed an agreed deal between AS Monaco and Tottenham, which would see Martial move to White Hart Lane for €25m. Back then it seemed a big, and perhaps over the top, amount of money for a young player who was relatively unknown. The move didn't come off, and Martial eventually signed for Manchester United.
On Friday L'Equipe say that Tottenham actually made a bid of €40m for Martial, but Monaco refused. It was a good offer but Monaco had already sold several of their players and that was the reason they had no intention of letting Martial leave the club.
Things changed with Manchester United's huge offer but, despite disagreeing figures, that's now two relatively reliable French outlets insisting Tottenham did have an attempt, or attempts, to sign Anthony Martial last summer. Tottenham weren't the only ones, Spanish club Valencia also had a €25m bid refused for footballer.
