Louis van Gaal's fairytale arrival at Manchester United took a blow on Saturday as his new team struggled against Swansea City. The performance wasn't terrible but wasn't good either and brought back some memories of life under David Moyes at Old Trafford.
The result and performance will mean much more pressure on Manchester United to make signings quickly, and big ones which will lift the club and genuinely improve the team. There's no point simply adding to a squad which has dropped markedly in quality over the past couple of years or so.
Angel Di Maria would be an improvement in quality for any team. He was one of Real Madrid's best performers last season and the best player in the Champions League final. To dispense with him this summer would appear to be madness but Real Madrid president Florentino Perez wanted James Rodriguez and from there on in a Di Maria was likely. The new kid on the block was deemed better for Real Madrid than a player who had been one of their stars last year.
Spanish newspaper Sport report on Saturday that Real Madrid have authorised Manchester United to start transfer talks with Di Maria and it's claimed that Louis van Gaal has spoken to the player to convince him a move to Old Trafford would be good for him.
PSG have pulled out of the race because of their battles with FFP and unless the French club can sell someone for a big fee then that looks like remaining the same.
