Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Wayne Rooney will be unavailable for the Ajax game because he's suffering from a throat infection. He missed today's training session and the manager revealed he's been struggling with illness for a few days.

Ferguson said his player had spent much of the weekend tucked up poorly in bed but that doesn't quite fit in with the photos of him happily watching Everton play in The FA Cup at Goodison Park. See above.

Manchester United are away at Norwich on Sunday and then England have a friendly against Holland next Wednesday. Capello had suggested he'd rest Rooney from the friendlies as he's banned for the first two matches of Euro 2012, but with the Italian no longer in charge the player may be called up.

Missing the Ajax game, just about managing the Norwich one, and then having a relapse so he wasn't available for England may suit everyone involved. We're a cynical lot.
