Four years after signing him, Barcelona still don’t know what to do with Alex Song. The player will be back this summer after two seasons on loan at West Ham, but he’s not part of Luis Enrique’s plans for the squad.
Song made just 15 appearances for West Ham last season, playing 854 minutes. Catalan newspaper Sport have an article on Tuesday making clear that if the midfielder was only a squad rotation player in a team who got the 7th place in the Premier League, then he has no place at a European giant such as Barcelona.
Sport mention the possible interest from Crystal Palace in signing Song, but as it stands he's going back to Barcelona and seeing out his contract. The Spanish club would very much like to have him off the wage bill, so Crystal Palace would hold some power in talks.
Since joining Barcelona from Arsenal for €19m in 2012, Song has made 65 appearances for the Catalan club. He was expected to be a utility player who could replace both the central defenders and the defensive midfielder, but he never really impressed at the Camp Nou and turned out to be a flop, much in the same way as at West Ham last season.
