Decimation, it's a funny old game and that's how to end a season.
Maghull 1 - 1 Heswall
Monday 29th April 2013 kick off 6.45pm
The English weather decided to throw it's might at us for our last game of the season. Blinding sunlight, coupled with lashings of rain and a chill that would have the Fox's glacier mint bear looking for some warmth.
Together, with seeing how many players where missing (Connor Wright made his first team bow from the Youth Team, as a second half substitute) and it being a probable, dull, end of…

Injuries, tales of woe and those end of season blues.
Maghull 2 - 4 Blacon YC
Saturday 27th April 2013 kick off 3pm
Not a lot to say about Saturday.
It was one of those languid, do we really have to play this fixture, kind of affairs.
Both sides had created half chances, in a very low key first half, Blacon were just fortuitous, in that Maghulls defending was not up to scratch. And they could not believe their luck when going off at half time, three goals to the good. Maybe a one goal lead would have been a…

Staying awake, giving false impressions but safety first.
Maghull 2 - 2 Upton AA
Wednesday 24th April 2013 kick off 6.45pm
Ok, when did the Lord Mayor show up ?
I think I have been pretty fair with the lads this season. Even when we have found ourselves at a pretty low ebb, a search has been on for the chink of light, that spark that will ignite our nights and bring three precious points to the cause, that we all strive for. Praise was thrown on the team after those sterling performances at Vauxhalls and Heswall. Likewise when…

Party poopers, real troopers and super doopers (god that sounds cheesy)
Heswall 1 - 1 Maghull
Monday 21st April 2013
There is no better place to start, than the start. But what an ending.
The league trophy was at the ready, our management had been asked if our players would stay on the pitch for the presentation at the end of the game. But a point was not enough and the trophy went back in it's box to be presented on another day. And all due to a richly deserved equaliser in time added on.
So shall we start ?
A very…

The wind, the rain and a bit of a Hale storm
Hale 1 v 2 Maghull
Wednesday 17th April 2013
Ok it didn't rain, though it should have rained goals, the amount of chances that we had. But it was decidedly windy.
A game that had its pace and skill dictated by the conditions, or should I say, of Hurricane Bertha. Or whatever it's name was called. The dastardly wind, blowing up the river, was a pest to both sides throughout the match.
Defending against mighty Bertha in the first half, Maghull seemed to manage the…

Down memory lane with ELO, Thin Lizzy and Frankie Valli !?!?
Maghull 2 - 1 Ashville
Monday 15th April 2013
A glorious spring evening greeted the teams out onto the pitch. An immaculate minutes silence was held prior to the engagement (you only need the date, 15th April) and away we went with Mr Blue Sky in attendance, together with a decent crowd.
A fiesty start saw both sides come out of the blocks quickly. No clear cut openings, but did give the promise of a tasty encounter to come. And we where not…

Save The Volley. Don't Let Lazy Analysis Win.
On a Sunday afternoon in 1994, Mark Hughes provided one of my earliest football memories. After 90 minutes at 0-0, Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final against Oldham went into extra time. Early in the second period, Neil Pointon capitalised on a rare Peter Schmeichel error to put Oldham 1-0 up. All looked lost. United had huffed and puffed but had been unable to break Oldham down or get anything passed Jon Hallworth, keeping goal valiantly for the Latics. Without the suspended Cantona,…

Nani are you okay?
Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha will not go down as one of the Manchester United greats. Signed for something around £16m in 2007, Nani has never totally won the hearts of the Old Trafford faithful. But Nani has always been one of my favourite players at United. Friends and pundits have maligned him for reasons I find hard to disagree with, but I’ve always fought his corner.
This week saw him fly-kick his way into the headlines. The general consensus seems to be that Nani’s red card…

A keepers heroics, a bad day on the line and losing the plot.
Blacon YC 2 - 1 Maghull
Saturday 2nd March 2013
Last week we gave credit where it was due. Well, we have gone full circle after this weeks game.
But let's focus on the positives to start with.
Mark Mawdesley had a blinder and ended up on the losing side, which was highly unfair. But in reality, Maghull only got what they deserved and we must learn to stop throwing points away.
The game started badly, when, after 5 minutes, Blacon where awarded a penalty for a…

The prophet of doom, reaping our rewengay and a good refs decision that went badly wrong.
Maghull 0 v 1 Cammell Lairds Reserves
Saturday 26th February 2013
A home game at last !
Our first,at Old Field Road, since 11th December 2012 (Happy New Year everybody) and only our second home match since October 29th 2012.
Pauline rolled out the hot, tasty treats, that where much needed on this chilly day (very nice to see good old Bovril make an appearance)and the new heaters in the clubhouse did a sterling job, keeping out the cold.
Oh yes, we…

The good, the bad and the ugly. And damned hard lines.
Vauxhall Motors Reserves 1 v 1 Maghull
Saturday 9th February 2013
Summing up...
We scored an amazing goal, got caught napping with two minutes to go and had to play ugly at times.
Now I suppose we had best sum up, the summing up.
The hosts came out of the blocks quite quickly and it soon became evident that this could be a backs to the wall afternoon.
But the attacking threat was constantly dismissed, even when the two speedy…

Handing away a lead, stuck in the mud revisited and the mind of a linesman
Christleton 2 v 1 Maghull Saturday 2nd February 2012
What a bad day at the races.
What began as a comfy stroll in the park, became quite frustrating and there really is no way of dressing it up, the lads got what they deserved.
A slow pace to the start of the game, allowed Maghull to play the ball around a bit. The home side not really featuring, in the early exchanges.
It should only be a matter of time, before we took the lead and this…

Those damn Welshys, a day for Bovril and a stuck in the mud ref
Saturday 12th January 2013
Ashville 2-1 Maghull
Yes peeps, I am back. Have you missed me ?
Well let's get the trivial bit out of the way first. My track record of missing the first few minutes of each away game (I seem to remember doing that a lot in the 80's, around the country) came back to haunt me as a coach driver decided to ignore Mr angry policeman and offload his cluster of Swansea fans on Walton Road and thus stop some of us, on time people, from getting to our…

Chelsea's main issue with Torres is clear: he is second rate
The appointment of Rafael Benitez at Stamford Bridge has got pundits and fans discussing the possibility of a return to form for the misfiring Fernando Torres. Some have even suggested that Chelsea’s trigger-happy owner Roman Abramovich appointed Benitez solely for the purpose of reviving Torres – a £50m vanity purchase carried out by the owner.
Since Torres’ move to west London from Liverpool, he has been an abject failure. After joining in January 2011 he made 18 appearances that…

Dan Hodges is wrong.
What about this time, you ask?
Today, after champing at the bit on Twitter for the past week, Dan published a piece from his corner on the Telegraph website to argue that Chelsea Football Club should be punished for making a complaint to the FA alleging, ultimately incorrectly, that a referee…

The loss of our cup, a trip back in time and some harsh words.
Saturday 10th November 2012
Christleton 3-1 Maghull Pyke Cup
After two years of being holders of this trophy, we went crashing out at the first hurdle, in this quaint little backwater of Cheshire.
A steady early start to the game gave some hope, as the hosts seemed happy to play the containment game. Nothing of note seemed to be happening, but the better play came from Maghull. Who must have been intent on not letting Christleton into the game, as they had…

Real Madrid provides viable option for want-away Manchester United star and agent ties help
With speculation that Manchester United’s Nani looks likely to be heading for the Old Trafford exit, the rumour mill has started on where the player will end up. The Portuguese winger has struggled to hold down a regular place in Manchester United’s first team this season with Alex Ferguson opting to use Antonio…

Halloween comes early, losing some basics and the cost of injuries.
Saturday 27th October 2012
Maghull 1-3 Southport Trinity
I would love to put some gloss on Saturdays proceedings, but in all honesty, it was a horror show.
Take away a 10 minute spell in the second half, in which Maghull equalised and then looked progressive, it was a day best forgotten and cast into the mire of bad performances.
The away side started the better, controlling the game and creating a couple of chances. The longer the half went on, the closer…

Hillsborough: Why Was the Cover-up Allowed to Happen
Over the past couple of months the truth about Hillsborough has finally come to light. But for many people the release of the report from the Hillsborough Independent Panel only confirmed what they already knew: the police were responsible, lives could’ve been saved with a better response from emergency services, and the police tried to cover up their mistakes.
But why was the cover up allowed to happen? Unlike many disasters, Hillsborough was recorded by TV cameras and…
