Champions League Draw Thursday 30th 2012

Search around the forums and Facebook, and you will see literally thousands of fans rejoicing about the draw United have, and scoffing at City's chances.

Despite Fergie err of caution still fans are convinced we are through before a ball is kicked, each of the six games we play will be tougher than a lot think.

Braga away will be tight, a small compact ground only just over 30k capacity, and a passionate partisan crowd, not an easy three… Continue

Some hope, a visit from Isaac and a team of Carraghers

Wednesday August 29 2012

Southport Trinity 1-2 Maghull

Ok we only had one..and another on the bench, but if it's good enough for that lot in L4, then it's good enough for us.

The changes where rung (and no doubt a few necks) after the weekends game. A tweak here and there, the loss of the skipper (through injury) and a debut.

Charty took the armband and the return of Jamie Blackhurst, Terry McDonald and James Robinson gave the side a better look.

The case against the bladed boot

Rooneys Injury

Bladed boots have been condemned by managers and surgeons since they were thrust onto the football scene by NIKE in the early part of the decade, there have been calls for them to be banned by none other than Sir Alex Ferguson, who to this day bans his players from wearing them.

With this horrific injury to Wayne Rooney, which required a general anaesthetic and a large amount of internal and external stitching there has to be an investigation…

Cammell Lairds Reserves 10-0 Maghull  Yes ten !

There is a saying in football, that relates to a team getting a bit of a pasting "it could have been double figures"

For the first time ever, I saw it happen.

To steal a line from Blackadder, "It started badly, tailed off in the middle and the least said about the end, the better"

All seemed to be going to plan. A penalty conceded after three minutes (scored) and a second goal,…

A pitch invasion, a fightback and the sucker punch (x2)

Mossley Hill 3-3 Maghull

Starting at the beginning always seems the best way. Unfortunately, a pattern is forming, where it seems a mountain, never mind a hill, is to be climbed, to get anything out of a game.

On a pitch that Franz Klammer would have had difficulty negotiating, Maghull decided to stay in the dressing room until the home side had struck twice (sorry,I retract that, they did play a huge part in the second goal)  Again, within the…

Wengers wizardry MUST continue

3 league titles, 4 F.A Cups, UEFA cup and champions league runners-up and the reinvention of one of the games true giants culminating in going an entire season unbeaten, which led to the longest unbeaten run in English football history of 49 games.

Sounds impressive doesn't it? Monsieur Wengers early Arsenal record is untouchable, especially when you take into account the magnificent stadium his success basically made possible and the reinvention of an old tired clubs image, style and…

A game of 80 minutes and when V isn't for victory.

Maghull 0-2 Chester Nomads

A good performance all round.

Granted, there where not chances galore, but enough where created and good ones too. Better luck in front of goal, would surely have seen, at least parity in the scoreline. Compounded by the visitors keeper having "one of those days"

Majority of possession and…

The Match of the Orginal Noisy Neighbours is Back

Since it was decided that Dundee would take Rangers place in the SPL, football fans in Dundee have had their eyes set on one date and time, 19th August 2012 12:45pm. The day the Dundee derby returns to the SPL, and Britain’s closest footballing neighbours go head to head one more.

The last competitive derby took place on April 30th 2005 when both teams were in a relegation battle. In the last round of fixtures that season Dundee United beat Inverness and Dundee defeated by Livingston… Continue

Maghull 4-1 Breckfield

It happened again !

Wakey wakey time is when the ref blows his whistle, not 5 or 10 minutes in.

The Merseyside Christian League champions, came out all guns blazing and Maghull needed time to settle. As a rough estimate, they had more shots in those first ten minutes…

When is a win not a win. And 1982 revisited

Saturday August 11 2012

Maghull 3-2 Edge Hill Boys

Puzzled reporter needs specsavers.

Made it on time for once. Well, only two minutes late, thanks to Tony Blackburn, but that's another story.

Suprising start by the visitors, who, from a lot lower league, seemed to play like it was their cup final, not a warm up game. Some fiesty…

The legacy responsibility rests with us all

My life has been wrapped in football since aged 8. Most things are planned around a match on TV, football training, or the weekend match. For 19 years, it has been this way. And I still remember when it started all that time ago. Some of my friends had started playing when they were 5 or 6. But it wasn’t until the encrypted TV screen turned into a match between Manchester United and Norwich City that I was gripped.

This moment was when football began for me. And, indeed, that year was…

A new title, a labrador and a visit from bram stoker

Maghull 0-5 Cammell Lairds

For the second time this pre season, a visiting side turns up at Old Hall Field and leaves with a resounding confidence boost.

After a much needed draw against South Liverpool (1-1) and another 1-1 draw with Hale, only to lose on penalties, this was a massive comedown against, what must be…

This Is Our Country

Culture can often move society more than any change in the legislature. Music has had a liberating effect. Films and television have communicated injustice. But over the last few days, sport has pushed British society further toward the ever advancing light of progress.

London 2012 first and foremost has been an extraordinary display of sport, athleticism and achievement. As a sports fan, this is my main reason for being gripped by the last few weeks. But it has also nudged Britain…

My Take on the Olympics

I enjoy sports. I am a sports nut but normally only for any sport that involves a ball of some sort and as a point of reference,  I consider a hockey puck a ball. I don't understand the appeal of swimming, gymnastics, track and field or trampoline and do not ever try to locate said sports on television except during the Olympics.

The Olympics are important because they are pure sport. The best from every country come together for a while to excel at their chosen sport. For those of…
