Three points the hard way, subs to the rescue and a ramshackle ending.

Maghull 2 - 1 West Kirby

Saturday 28th September 2013 kick off 3pm

I feel like I am picking on the side of late. Maybe, being league leaders brings too much expectation. But Saturday really should have been a lot easier, than it turned out to be.

Then again, Lee Mullen having an Anders Limpar moment within two minutes did not help matters. What possessed him to handle the ball, only he knows, but it gave West Kirby the perfect start, as the penalty was…

A stroll in the park,Jekyll and Hyde and will lessons be learned.

Waterloo GSOB 2-4 Maghull

Saturday 21st September 2013 kick off 2pm

Let's be nice shall we.

Thirty seconds in, Mikey Cummins is put through, but his shot strikes the underside of the bar and down on the wrong side of the line, for Maghull. An early warning of what was to come ! Not really, because Waterloo, themselves, had a very good opportunity to open the scoring, when the centre forward was put clean through only to strike his shot woefully wide of the mark.…

Looking comfortable, becoming sloppy, and a very painful end

Newton 0-3 Maghull

Saturday 14th September 2013 kick off 3pm

I am here to report on a football match, so I will do that.

Two great strikes from the edge of the box, from Rob Dutton, gave us a cracking start. And a tremendous platform to go on and boost the goal difference.

A run from deep, cutting in from the left and taking advantage of a moses moment in the Newton defence, Dutton struck home to open the scoring. Soon after and a move between Tom Foley…

Missing chances, our Chopper Harris and a fine revival

Vauxhall Motors Reserves 1-3 Maghull

Tuesday 10th September 2013 kick off 7.30pm

This is becoming a good habit. Five away day trips and four wins.

The boss has certainly found that winning formula. Though he did puzzle us in the second half.

Against a side who played the first half with a very high line, Maghulls normal fluent passing game was left to the back four, while the midfield were left to make hay, spraying passes over and through…

Ten men run the game, consistency and we finally score from the spot.

Upton AA 3-4 Maghull

Saturday September 7th 2013 kick off 3pm

Seven goals, a sending off, some shocking defending and puzzlement with the officials. Now how do I cram all this into two paragraphs !

Dillon, Williams 2 and Hastings scored for Maghull, some players scored three goals for Upton amidst some awful defending,Mullen sent off for Maghull and the referee could have had a better game. Three points and back level with the leaders.

There, I did…

A shocker, a nightmare and a stinker

Maghull 1 - 3 Blacon YC

Saturday 31st August 2013 kick off 3pm

Sorry Phil, but that just about sums it up.

What began as sloppy, just deteriorated and eventually became a wish for the final whistle to get this game out of the way.

Yes some players were missing, for reasons unknown. But that is just clutching at straws, so lets get this over and done with.

The first five minutes set the pattern of the day. No cohesion, no slick passing and to…

War and peace revisited, letting them off the hook and which one is van-Persie

Hale 2-3 Maghull

Wednesday 28th August 2013 kick off 6.30pm

For those of you with the attention span of a goldfish, we won.

For everyone else, grab a beer, light a cigar, settle back and I shall continue.

What a very good game of football.

Mostly one way traffic, but as a biased reporter I am entitled to say that. I wouldn't say the first half was one sided, but I am sure I could here the Hale management shouting "no mas" (any boxing fans will know…

The officials nightmare, sloppy moments and turning things on its head.

Maghull 4-3 Cammell Lairds Reserves

Saturday 24th August 2013 kick off 3pm

Last season we had a shocking habit of gifting the opposition a two goal start, sometimes even more. Cammell Lairds away springs to mind. This season we have been a stronger outfit, but the officials decided to intervene and bring about the two goal deficit.

A full 90 minutes was asked for, after the Southport Trinity victory in midweek. We got 75, so cannot grumble. But we could…

A game of two halves, a returning son and a lack of blondes.

Maghull 2 - 1 Southport Trinity

Wednesday 21st August 2013 k/o 6.30pm

A lovely, warm evening greeted the players, amongst whom was Tom Foley, back in a Maghull shirt after his two season sabbatical at Bootle FC.

The early exchanges were pretty lame to be fair. Maghull with neat and tidy passing movements, the opposition using the more direct approach to the game, though not uneasy on the eye. But a sum total of bugger all seemed to be going…

The river of rain, playing the new boys and a real performance

South Liverpool 1 - 3 Maghull

Saturday 17th August 2013 k/o 3pm

Yep, I was late again... it was all Stoke's fault.

The pitch looked somewhat...bumpy, to say the least. I have seen less caverns in the Blue John caves, or am I just picky ?

Anyway, the first half (ok I only missed five minutes before any of you moan) seemed pretty much a replica of Wednesday nights fare. Only this time the upper hand and chances created, came from Maghull. I had…

A late kick off, the refs blooper and a bit of a shambles

Mossley Hill Athletic 1 - 0 Maghull

Wednesday 14th August 2013

The first game of the season, all pumped up, ready for three points, but...this was one of those games, probably best put in the forget quickly file.

The referee telling us that the kick off was 6.30 and not 6.15 was not much appreciated by those of us who had tested the speedometers of our vehicles to get there on time. Though it did allow some catch up time with my brother in…

Our Harbinger of DOOM, fun on the sidelines and those pesky penalties.

Maghull 0-2 Cammell Lairds

Tuesday 6th August 2013

I am not too sure whether we had a football match last night, or some good old fashioned banter.

Suppose we had best stick to the football and I may just drift along and see what happens here.

Last season we played hosts to Cammell Lairds in a pre-season friendly and got royally thumped 5-0. Last night was a totally different affair and that may have had something to do with aforementioned…

Deja vu, basking in the sun and did it cross the line ?

Maghull 3 v 2 Bootle

Saturday 3rd August 2013

Did we, or did we not play these a few days ago ?

Oh well. let us just say it was a different bunch of characters this time.

On a lovely warm afternoon, Maghull finally did it.

We opened the scoring !

Having taken up the summer reporting position, in the newly opened John McInnes stand, a fine game of football ensued. Well it was, up until some changes took place in the latter stages.

The Jim Evans Memorial Trophy

Maghull 4 v 2 Merseyside Police

Tuesday 30th July 2013

The visitors came out all guns blazing (no pun intended) and really made a game of it. The first fifteen to twenty minutes saw them take a two goal lead and quite honestly, they could have been even further ahead.

Sloppy play by Maghull and not taking the game as a serious challenge, early on, also led to this quirky early scoreline. But fair play to Merseyside Police, who wanted to put on a show and…

Swapping and changing, a strange kind of trial and fading in the dark.

Maghull 0 v 3 Bootle

Thursday 25th July 2013

It has to be said, this was not the most enthralling pre season game I have ever seen.

Once again, playing against higher league opposition, this should have been a good fitness level tester and a guide to how the forthcoming season may pan out.

It really did neither.

Though I am sure Phil Stafford gained much food for thought, from the game.

An early goal conceded, did nothing to dampen…

First home game of the season(ish) plenty of visitors and getting match fit

Maghull 0 v 2 AFC Liverpool

Tuesday 23rd July 2013

Helloooooo, every bloody peeps, had a great summer ?

Well pack away the sun creams, Andy Murray souvenir rackets and your Ashes subscriptions, Footy is back !

And yes, unfortunately, that also means I am too.... I can already sense that huge sigh of exhaustion and dread. I promise to make things as painless as possible. Ok, I lie, but lets all get on that West Cheshire roller coaster, have some fun and a shed…

Phils first appraisal in the sun

Bootle 2 v 2 Maghull

Saturday 13th July 2013

A good run out for the lads.

Lot's for Phil Stafford to take on board, plenty of new and old players to check out and they gave him food for thought.

Happy with Phils approach to things.

Very calm and composed, mixed with passion and eagerness to make things right.

Two early goals gave us a good start, but a couple of Calamity Jane moments from corners saw Bootle back into the game before the…

Decimation, it's a funny old game and that's how to end a season.

Maghull 1 - 1 Heswall

Monday 29th April 2013 kick off 6.45pm

The English weather decided to throw it's might at us for our last game of the season. Blinding sunlight, coupled with lashings of rain and a chill that would have the Fox's glacier mint bear looking for some warmth.

Together, with seeing how many players where missing (Connor Wright made his first team bow from the Youth Team, as a second half substitute) and it being a probable, dull, end of…

Injuries, tales of woe and those end of season blues.

Maghull 2 - 4 Blacon YC

Saturday 27th April 2013 kick off 3pm

Not a lot to say about Saturday.

It was one of those languid, do we really have to play this fixture, kind of affairs.

Both sides had created half chances, in a very low key first half, Blacon were just fortuitous, in that Maghulls defending was not up to scratch. And they could not believe their luck when going off at half time, three goals to the good. Maybe a one goal lead would have been a…

Staying awake, giving false impressions but safety first.

Maghull 2 - 2 Upton AA

Wednesday 24th April 2013 kick off 6.45pm

Ok, when did the Lord Mayor show up ?

I think I have been pretty fair with the lads this season. Even when we have found ourselves at a pretty low ebb, a search has been on for the chink of light, that spark that will ignite our nights and bring three precious points to the cause, that we all strive for. Praise was thrown on the team after those sterling performances at Vauxhalls and Heswall. Likewise when…
