A difficult task, a damn cold day and getting the job done.

Maghull 2-0 Chester Nomads

Saturday 7th December 2013 kick off 2pm

It is a very difficult job to make much of Saturdays game, it felt like a huge non event. Maybe after the huge games in the previous two weeks, a lull was to be expected. Well, this was a game, purely for insomniacs.

With a vast array of talent at his disposal (and some still on the injured list) Phil Stafford will probably now have his hardest work of the season in front of him. By keeping the players happy with appearances and focusing them on the job in hand. A nice problem to have.

The game itself was a damp squib.
Chester came with one forward and a pretty obvious containing plan. But the containment was pretty woeful at times and Maghull should really have been ahead early on. It was only a matter of time, before the opening goal came and it was struck home from the edge of the box, by Jay McGrane, after good work by Steve Williams.

This did not spur on either side and did nothing to warm up the chilly crowd on a bitterly cold day. The rest of the half fizzled out and hot drinks where needed rapidly.

Forty five minutes lay ahead and it became pretty tedious stuff. Chester seemed happy to settle for the 0-1 scoreline, Maghull seemed happy playing the ball around, as if it was an exhibition game.

We did eventually get treated to a talking point, when Lee Tynan increased the lead. Colin McDonald was coming back from an offside position, Steve Williams took advantage of McDonalds complete non interest in the play, stole into the gap in the Chester defence and squared the ball for Tynan to place inside the post. The visitors appealed for offside, but only half heartedly, but it was the nearest to some excitement we had in the second half.

Chester actually had a strike on goal, very late on, which hit the upright and kept Lee Carrols clean sheet intact.

And that was it. Three points, a lacklustre game, but a 16 point lead opened at the top of the table. If the wins keep coming, I think most will happily settle for more games like this.
