Bored, a late wake up and finally taking control

Maghull 3-1 Manor Athletic

Saturday 5th October 2013 kick off 3pm

Somebody told me, that this game kicked off at 3pm on Saturday. It seemed more like 4pm.

Aside from a hotly disputed penalty to Manor, on the stroke of half time, absolutely nothing of any significance occurred. Even the penalty award was so innocuous, that it took us by surprise. But Mike Dixon was beaten and the scoreline at the interval was one nil to the lower league visitors.

Without sounding too harsh, I can only think the lads had their minds on the up and coming midweek league game.

Maghull were sent out early for the second half and started to put the visitors to the sword. The goal just didn't seem to want to come. Not helped by one of the worst time wasting performances I have seen in a long time, by the visiting keeper.

Eventually substitutions were made and the breakthrough came. Though slightly fortuitously. Mick McGinn did very well down the right and drove the ball across the box, a Manor defender tried to clear, but only managed to beat his own keeper. From then on, the game was over. The visitors had held out for fifteen minutes and it was now only a matter of time before the game was closed out.

The advantage came through a bit of a stunner. Mikey Cummins received the ball with his back to goal. One touch to the side and lashed a left footer that dipped just under the bar and a huge roar came from the large crowd. Chinese whispers say it was somewhere between the edge of the D and the half way line. All we know is, it was a hell of a strike.

It soon became all too easy and having moved up through the gears, the result was settled when Steve King headed home a great cross from Ryan Stamper.

With the game in the bag, Maghull settled down and ran down the clock. When needed, they stepped up and took the game by the scruff of the neck and took the win. Mike Dixon was more or less a spectator.

This winning thing is becoming a very nice habit. Let's keep it up, when back to the bread and butter on Wednesday, lads.
