Old Xavarians 1-3 Maghull
Saturday 20th September kick off 2pm
I would like to comment on the first half, but work duties and misinformation deigned my appearance to be at the half time whistle. When I thought I was early. Believe me, Natalie (a customer at work) was partly to blame and seems I am to know if it is a cup game, it will kick off at 2pm. Lesson learned
So, I have been told that Maghull should have been 3-0 up at the break, others claim that the hosts could easily have bagged a couple themselves. All I can say, for certain, is that it was 0-0 when I arrived and the side had a multitude of changes. Injuries, suspensions and holidays taking it's toll on the side.
The second half was a good watch. Two sides going toe to toe for the win and only the latter stages saw Xavarians fade and Maghull finish comfortable. In fact, it was Xavs who opened the scoring.
A good save by Lee Carrol kept out a Xavarian player who was clean through on his own and really should have scored himself. The respite was short lived, as the resulting corner was headed home and the shock was on. Then we saw the hosts keeper turn the game on its head.
With Maghull starting to crank up the pressure, he made a hash of a backpass, scuttled back towards his goal and dived on the ball, giving away a free kick and gaining himself a yellow card. And no doubt a whole bag of nerves. The free kick came to nothing, but soon enough the equaliser came,
With a ball played through a static back line, Robert Nadine went through, the keeper was favourite but missed his kick again. Nadine took advantage and strode on to place the ball into the empty net. His nightmare was not over yet.
Very soon after Drew Murphy was sent clear, the keeper came out of his box, was beaten to the ball and he brought the player down. He did have covering players coming behind him, but it was a second yellow and his game was over. Mike Cummins rubbed salt into the wounds by clipping the free kick inside the far post.
In fairness, Xavarians kept going and did make a couple of half chances to get back in the game, but it would have been papering over the cracks. As since the break Maghull really should have been out of sight, but such is cup football, anything can happen. And it did
The game was wrapped up by Colin McDonald after Cummins shot was deflected into his path. McDonald did look offside, but the officials deemed it was ok. After the linesman had flagged for an offence. The game was all but over, despite the hosts annoyance at the officials decision. I would not have been happy if it was given against Maghull. Need to check up on that offside law. It's not the 70's anymore.
The steam went out of the hosts, all subs were used and it was just a case of playing out time.
