First home game of the season(ish) plenty of visitors and getting match fit

Maghull 0 v 2 AFC Liverpool

Tuesday 23rd July 2013

Helloooooo, every bloody peeps, had a great summer ?
Well pack away the sun creams, Andy Murray souvenir rackets and your Ashes subscriptions, Footy is back !

And yes, unfortunately, that also means I am too.... I can already sense that huge sigh of exhaustion and dread. I promise to make things as painless as possible. Ok, I lie, but lets all get on that West Cheshire roller coaster, have some fun and a shed load of wins this season.

And let's be honest, more wins, means less of me yakking about blondes at the games...so no pressure there Phil !

Higher league opposition paid a visit to Old Hall Field, for our first home match of the pre season and a very tasty encounter ensued.

AFC Liverpool (good job I am not a blue boy, or that name could have been spelt with lots of *#@+*) put out a very strong side and began the game very well. Not sure if too much respect was paid by Maghull, or they were just caught unawares, but the first twenty minutes was played entirely in our half, barring one brief breakaway. During which time the visitors took the lead, albeit due to a wee slip in midfield and a lack of an alarm call at the back. Was this a return to last seasons bad habits ?

Actually, no.

Sometimes, you just have to accept that the opposition are playing better and deal with it the best you can. Which, to Maghulls credit, they did. The rest of the half was a much more equal affair. No real cutting edge by either side, but good entertaining football was on view. The American breakaway group, had a pretty large following and were quite vociferous. I was half expecting a rendition of Fields of Valerie Park from them... not used to supporters flags being draped over the barriers complete with 1950's rattles in action. But it was fun to see.

Sadly, the second half started pretty much the same way as the first. Together with a second goal. We had got out of jail, when a very good goal was ruled out with a harsh offside decision, but the stay of execution was short, when a few minutes later, a misjudgement saw the visitors take a two goal lead. It has to be said, that it was deserved.

Once again, Maghull got themselves back into the game and played some very good football. Just that bit of sharpness missing, which will come during the pre season spell. Also, AFC Liverpool where playing their fourth game as opposed to Maghulls second. so they did have that little extra fitness level. So, to give the noisy visitors a run for there money and give there defence problems, really does auger well for the up and coming season. In fact, with a little bit of a kind bounce and probably better finishing, we should have got one back, ten minutes from time. But that would be nit picking. A fair scoreline on the night.

A very enjoyable game, a very pleasing performance and the makings of a very good side, give me hope for the season ahead.

I have already made my prediction as to where I think we will finish. Don't let me down lads... I have confidence in you.
