Three more points, a bit of a nightmare, but the sun returned

Maghull 1-0 Newton

Saturday 1st March 2013 kick off 3pm

I will find it hard to say much about this game. I don't think anyone could say much about it to be honest.

It had all the quality and gusto of a meaningless, end of season affair. But this game did have meaning, three very important points where up for grabs.

On a lovely sunny day, the newly found bright weather seemed to throw the players into some sort of strange lull. And unfortunately, it did not seem to get any better.

The post was struck from a free kick by Jackson, I think (poor I know, but can't remember who took it) and Stephen King hit the bar from the rebound. Sum total of Maghulls efforts in the first half.

It was just as well that the clubs Uncle Johnny was away watching the reserves semi final, against next weeks opponents. As he would have been pulling his hair out at this performance.

Maghull were helped early on, when Newtons right back, took on board his second yellow of the game, though the referee had waved him away after booking him and had to be reminded that he was to be dismissed. Schoolboy error from both parties, though the first booking may have been a tad harsh.

If anything, this seemed to spur on the visitors, who, though never threatening, did manage to hold there own. The game had another strange twist to come before the break. A tough challenge brought a free kick for Maghull and rather surprisingly another red card. A yellow would have been sufficient and the visitors bench was incensed. Not the best game of the refs career, I am sure.

Newton again seemed to up their game and 0-0 at half time was no surprise.

The second half brought about very little more.

One moment of inspiration from Micheal Boyle, found Rob Dutton who beat the keeper to the ball, took a clattering, but found the net.

From there onwards, it should have been a cakewalk..but it wasn't. The nine men never looked like scoring and the game fizzled out.

The important thing was three points. The lads always seem to respond in the games where it matters. So let's get this out of the system, move on and get a cup semi final win next week.
