Maghull 2 - 3 West Kirby
Saturday 21st March 2015 kick off 3pm
Was this a game too many for the season ? Ok, it hasn't been the best, but I certainly hope not, as there are four games left and as things stand a final placing in the bottom half of the table is a possibility. And we don't want that do we !
Saturday looked like many had the end of the season in view, all well and good if going out with a flourish is the way it is to be. Instead, it was painful viewing and taking away a ten or fifteen minute spell, the visitors controlled the game. And yet, Maghull still contrived to miss many chances, from a dismal display and on chances alone, could have won it. Though it would have been a travesty. But if you change your mind and give us a rousing end to the season, I will be the first to pass on the plaudits.
West Kirby started the better and though Maghull were caught by a couple of pretty bad offside decisions (one was a run from his own half) you cannot blame self pity for the howler that brought about the opening goal. A free kick from distance brought about a Laurel and Hardy moment and West Kirby gleefully accepted the present. The second was not much better, as the visitors played the better football, they went further ahead thanks to another shambles at the back. A corner dissected the six yard box, a lone figure wandered in and just knocked it over the line. It really was that easy. And it didn't look like getting any better.
A stroke of luck came in the form of an offside not being raised when it should have. Danny Dillon cracked a shot that the keeper pushed onto the bar, the rebound found James Riley all on his own six yards out, clearly offside, but he didn't stand on ceremony. He despatched his effort and the offside call never came. On the stroke of half time Maghull had a lifeline.
The half time chat must have been pretty fiesty as the second half brought about a huge change. Maghull looked interested and had the visitors worried. They pressed, they gambled and played some good stuff. A chance or two went begging, then out of the blue James Steel smashes in a worldy with his left foot into the top corner of the net. 2-2 and game on.
I have no idea if Maghull took a breather after getting the scores level, or if West Kirby decided to get their heads sorted, either way the game swung the way of the visitors again. And soon enough they had the winner.
Maghull huffed and puffed but all to no avail. It was game over and if anyone was going to score again, it was West Kirby. though James Steel did have a great chance to bring the scores level in the dying minutes, but put his shot wide.
Time to finish this horrible run and finish the season with a bit of class. It's not time for the sunglasses just yet.
